HFCS Girls & Women Donate Hair to Kids In Need

Students in the Advocates of Compassion Club had their second annual Love Is In The Hair donation event on Friday, June 9th, 2017 in the High School Auditorium. Girls and women donated their hair to “Children With Hair Loss,” an organization that creates wigs for children in need.

Over twenty girls and women (including four HFCS employees), donated their hair. Additionally, anonymous donations came from community members. In total, 207.5 inches (over 17 feet) of hair were donated this year.

Jennifer Berry, Advocates of Compassion (AOC) club advisor, said, “A lot of the girls were scared to cut off so much hair, but they were immediately happy once they did it.” She continued, “They felt joy for the sacrifice they made to help such a great cause. It’s so rewarding to see our students give back in such a personal and meaningful way.” Mrs. Berry added, “It was also great to see girls in the 5th and 6th-grade work together with girls in the junior / senior high school for this great cause.”

Emma Ganger-Spivak, one of the student representatives who help organize the event said, “The purpose of our club is to give students an opportunity to exercise their altruism and compassion during the school day.” She explained, “Love is In The Hair is a perfect expression of AOC’s goals, reminding students to appreciate aspects of their lives they take for granted and asking that they step out of their comfort zone to share their luck.”

Emma added, “I have so much appreciation for everyone who donated last Friday, many of who overcame insecurities and anxieties for the sake of helping complete strangers. I sincerely hope that this event will become a fixture at Hoosick Falls.”
