Home / Arts / Art Department Hosting Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser for HACA

empty bowls 2016

Empty Bowls has become a tradition for the art department at Hoosick Falls Jr. / Sr. High School, and this year that tradition continues on May 12th, 2017.

Empty Bowls is an event that connects art to hunger awareness and brings the community together. As in past years, St. Mary’s Academy and Hoosac School will be contributing soups for the event.  “Empty Bowls” events are held in many areas in the United States and Canada supporting food-related charities and raising money to aid in the fight against hunger.

Students in Ms. Collins Ceramics class have been hard at work crafting handmade bowls. Ms. Collins said, “Even though I am new to the area, I am grateful to be a part of this community and share our support in the Empty Bowls fundraiser.”

Ms. Collins joined HFCS as a new teacher in September. Over the past few months, she has gotten to know Hoosick Falls and has noticed how generous the community is. “This fundraiser is a true testament to the support that the students and public have to their strong community. I’m excited to keep this tradition alive for many to come.“

For a $10 donation, guests may choose from one of the hundreds of handmade bowls. The soup is free with the bowl; soup and bowls are available on a first-come, first serve basis. Tickets will be available at the door, or ahead of time from HACA, area churches, or Joyce Brewer. The event will also feature live music from the HFCS Fiddle Club, with special guests.

Speaking about this event, Father Tom Zelker shared a quote from Teresa of Calcutta (she worked with our world’s poorest people) who once said, “we cannot all do great things, but we can all do small things with great love.”

He added, “Each handcrafted bowl, soups tastily made, and every meal shared in kindness and with a smile uplift all of Earth’s children. Our simple care for each other makes a world of difference beginning here in Hoosick Falls.”

Diane Hosterman, HACA Director, said, “Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Empty Bowls event last year, including potters, sponsors, churches, schools, volunteers, and everyone who purchased a ticket. This was a record-breaking event and went a long way toward supporting the mission of the HACA Food Pantry. Supporting the event again this year will help us fill the empty bowls of those facing hunger. Each dollar you spend at Empty Bowls provides food for five meals.”

Last year this event raised over $1,500 for the HACA Food Pantry.

The event will take place in the Hoosick Falls Jr. / Sr. High School cafeteria on May 12, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
