It may have been frosty and cold out Tuesday morning, but the National Honor Society members at HFCS were warm with holiday cheer as they prepared to spend the day shopping for Hoosick Falls children in need.
The National Honor Society Christmas Wish Program provides gifts for needy children within the Hoosick Falls School District. Throughout the month of November and December the National Honor Society receives referrals from teachers, staff and community members for children in need of clothing for Christmas, including winter coats and boots. This year there have been a record number of referrals.
“We have 120 children to shop for,” said Karen Tommasino, teacher and NHS advisor.
Thanks to the generosity of many individuals through monetary donations the NHS students get the honor of shopping for children in the community. The group gathered Tuesday morning with wish lists in hand that included children’s sizes, favorite colors and style choices.
Tommasino welcomed Kathi Carknard, who arrived with a donation of $500 from the EC Youth Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping kid active. The EC Youth Fund, created in honor of Kathi’s husband Ed, provides funding for children in the Town of Hoosick to participate in activities and purchase equipment. Supporting programs like the Christmas Wish are other was the EC Youth Fund serves the community.
Carknard presented the check to Chapter President, Grace Wysocki and then surprised the group, including Tommasino, with an additional $1,000 check.
“We had the money and they needed it,” said Carknard, “They have double the amount of kids to shop for this year.”
Another act of kindness came a couple weeks ago at the annual Restino Christmas Party, which has been hosted by Margaret and Tom Restino for more than ten years. This Christmas party began as a small family gathering at the Restino home, but has grown into a larger gathering held at the Hoosick Falls Country Club. Margaret had the idea of hosting a party for friends and asked each friend to bring a toy for a child at Christmas. The toys were then distributed to the Christmas Wish program, to go along with new clothing for children.
