Performances set for April 5-7, 2019
“I chose Seussical for the Spring 2019 season not only because it highlights our students so well, but also because it so beautifully presents contemporary themes,” said Melissa Zimmermann, the Drama Club Advisor at HFCS, “Seussical is about diversity, acceptance, friendship, and loyalty.”
Zimmermann has used these themes in practice as a way to teach the students more than just acting and performance skills.
“One of the lines I’ve found to be most powerful is delivered by the Sour Kangaroo (played Kelsey Haynes), while trying to get a group of characters to turn against the show’s protagonist, Horton the Elephant (played by Conner Zedalis). She says, ‘Somebody’s thinkin’ different than us’. We were able to turn this into a great discussion and learning opportunity,” explained Zimmermann, “In the social climate our kids are living in, what an important time it is to drive these messages home!”
The Drama Club has been busy rehearsing for over a month and are hopeful their hard work will pay off when they hit the stage the first weekend in April. The cast will aim to bring to life our “favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.” (www.mtishows.com)
“We are so excited to share this beautiful story with the community,” added Zimmermann.
The production will open on Friday, April 5th at 7 p.m. in the Hoosick Falls High School Auditorium and shows will also be held on Saturday, April 6th at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 7th at 1 p.m. As always, the shows are free and open to all.
