Yvonne Chord (August 23, 1956 – January 17, 2023), lovingly known as “YAYA” by her friends and family, was a passionate and multi-talented artist. A gifted crafter, Yvonne was known for her exceptional sewing skills, her work with ceramics, and her deep appreciation for the grunge-inspired style of artist Tim Holtz. Her creativity knew no bounds, and her ability to recall, describe, and teach complex crafting techniques earned her a reputation as both a mentor and inspiration.
“She had a mind like a steel trap,” Rufina shared. “She could teach anything she learned, and she shared her knowledge generously.”
The two women worked side by side for 22 years as massage therapists, and their bond extended far beyond the workplace. They were affectionately referred to as “the YAYAs” by those who knew them, a testament to their inseparable friendship.
She expressed deep emotion while delivering the donation:
"We were inseparable. She was the other half of my soul, and I know that what you're able to do with these things is bringing great joy to the YAYAs—more than words can express. She collected these materials for over 30 years. Knowing they will now bring joy to students, expand their creativity, and help shape their artistic visions—that’s something we all need."
The donation includes an impressive array of crafting materials: stamps, rulers, paper cutters, die-cutting tools, patterned paper, paints, scissors, woodcraft items, a Big Shot shape cutting and embossing machine, canvases, binding tools, markers, glitter, a creative station for laminating and crafting, metal art tools, card-making supplies, and scrapbooking materials.
These resources will significantly enrich the HFCS middle and high school art programs, benefiting students involved in Art Club, Studio Art, Advanced Art, AP Art, and Special Education Art. Yvonne Chord’s legacy will live on through the hands and hearts of young artists inspired by the tools she once cherished.
