Last week, HFCSD hosted the founder of Speak Sobriety, Stephen Hill. Hill is a renowned national speaker on the topics of substance use prevention and mental health. He is a bestselling author, an accomplished defense attorney, and offers a unique perspective as an individual who is in recovery. Hill inspires and connects with students while telling his own personal comeback story. Hill led three separate presentations- one for 8th graders, one for 10th graders, and one for our seniors. Each presentation is tailored to the age group he is speaking with. He engages with the students in a way that maintains interest, gets them asking questions, and thinking about subjects on both a personal level as well as in a broader perspective. The 12th-grade presentation, 'Know the Law, Save a Life', is designed specifically for students leaving high school and moving on to college, the military, or the workforce. It focuses on the legal changes that occur when you turn 18 and are considered an adult under the law. Topics include misdemeanors, felonies, DWAI, DWI, hosting parties, providing underage youth with illegal substances, the Good Samaritan Law, and consent versus non-consent. He delivers an impactful message, and we are grateful we could have him here to speak with our students. HFCSD plans to continue these presentations annually, as they are pertinent and inspiring. Sending a huge thank you to Stephen Hill @speaksobriety for adding Hoosick Falls to his list of stops! To learn more, please visit speaksobriety.com
