🎂 Twenty-two senior students in Mr. Brian Bushner’s AP Government and Politics class recently held their annual "Cake Day"!🍰 Students formed teams and chose a Supreme Court case to research that relates to the concept of federalism in the United States. Because federalism is sometimes described as either a “layered cake” or “marble cake”, students can bake a cake that displays the type of federalism their case would be classified as on the interior. For the exterior, they decorate the cake based on the theme of the case.
The Supreme Court cases and teams were as follows:
Roe v. Wade (two teams/ cakes: Zoe and Brooke / Ayden)
Obergefell v. Hodges (Ana, Chyah, Karalina, Ethan)
South Dakota v. Dole (Lizzy, Katy, Mattison)
Brown v. Board of Education (two teams/cakes: Kady, Ava, Sydne, Erin / Halley, Paylyn)
Gibbons v. Ogden (Luke, Wyatt, Chris, Blake)
Students are given a lot of freedom with this project, as long as they can explain the concept of federalism as it relates to the SCOTUS case. Mr. Bushner shared that he was “Impressed with how creative the students were and how broadly they looked through U.S. history to choose their cases.” The students always enjoy this creative assignment and have fun tasting the cakes too! Thanks for sharing this project and pictures, Mr. Bushner!

Mrs. Mabey's AP Environmental Science/SUNY-Environmental Science and Forestry Global Environment Class participated in A Day in the Life of the Hudson River this past week. What is Day in the Life? Each fall, schools all along the Hudson River collaborate to create a “day-in-the-life” picture of the river. The annual event is designed to bring school groups and education partners to the Hudson, where they can learn directly from the river. Using seine nets, minnow pots, water-testing gear, and simple tools, thousands of students catch and release many of the Hudson’s 200-plus species of fish. They also track the river’s tides and currents, check the salinity, examine water chemistry and quality, and even take a look at the muddy river bottom. The students thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. They love having the opportunity to get outside and connect their classroom studies in a practical and beautiful setting. Thank you for sharing, Mrs. Mabey!

The elementary school would like to send a big "Thank you!" to Heritage Family Credit Union, which made a very generous donation of 25 boxes of supplies to the elementary school teachers. Branch Manager, Heidi Sweet, said that they wanted to start the year off right and welcome the teachers and students back to school. MacKenzie Sprague and Jim Martinez came on the afternoon of September 3rd and delivered the boxes to each elementary classroom. Heidi Sweet and Jim Martinez came back again on September 30th, to deliver more student supplies that were donated by employees and HFCU customers. Thank you for supporting our students and the community!
